Arts Club

Open to everyone with an interest in art, this is a thriving club for amateur artists providing tuition and instruction in painting techniques through a full programme held on Thursday afternoons in the Village Hall between 2pm and 4pm. The membership includes the full spectrum from new painters to the very experienced and provides a relaxing informal atmosphere to acquire new skills and meet new friends. There are no banks in the village. The nearest ones are at Boston Spa and Wetherby, though there is a cashpoint (fee payable) within the Half Moon Inn at Collingham. Customers of Alliance & Leicester, Barclays, Cahoot, Co-op Bank, Halifax BOS, Lloyds TSB and Yorkshire can pay into and withdraw from their account at East Keswick Post Office.

Beavers

Junior section of Scouting Association. Open to all boys aged 6 to 8 years Currently all boys move to Cubs in Bardsey at 8 years Meets Tuesday evenings at the Village Hall during term time from 5.15pm until 6.15pm to 'have fun and make friends' through playing games, making things and exploring outdoors. Bottle Bank

There is a mixed Bottle Bank and a Paper Bank (no cardboard) in the Village Hall car park on School Lane. There is a second bottle bank, for public use, in the car park of the Duke of Wellington.


Brownies

Bus Services

Service 99 Leeds - East Keswick - Wetherby

Buses run every hour to Leeds (City Square for Rail Station) via Bardsey (Bank Top), Scarcroft, Wellington Hill, Oakwood and Harehills. In the other direction, at the same frequency, buses run to Collingham, Linton and Wetherby. Many evening and Sunday journeys are extended to Deighton Bar. At these times alternate buses will miss out Linton and show Service 98

Service 923 Tadcaster - Wetherby - East Keswick - Otley

This is a rural minibus service which runs south along Main Street to Bardsey, Scarcroft, Bardsey (Congreaves), Collingham, Wetherby, Boston Spa and Tadcaster. In the opposite direction, up Main Street, the service runs to Harewood (save your bus ticket for reduced admission to Harewood House), Arthington, Pool and Otley.

Serves local churches for special events and festivals, presents an annual concert and undertakes major choral work. Extend Exercise Class

If you're over 60 and have a mobility problem, this class could be ideal. Supported by the Parkinson's Disease Society and approved by the Physio department of Chapel Allerton Hospital, this clas runs for an hour on Tuesday mornings at 11am in the Village Hall. The cost is £1.50 per session and full details are available from Linda Thompson on 0113 293 5930. Help is available with transport if required.

 Keep fit classes

Keep fit in East Keswick by joining one of these classes at the vilage hall designed for all ages, both sexes and every level of fitness. All are a fun way to keep fit amongst small friendly and welcoming groups. All over workout classes run for an hour on Tuesday mornings at 9.30am and Thursday evenings at 6.45pm Join either or both, the cost is £4 per session. Aerobics classes run Thursdays at 6.30pm and the cost is £3.50 per session. Meet each Wednesday (termtime) in the Village Hall from 7.15pm to 8.45pm. Guiding is about acquiring skills, enabling girls and young women to be ready to meet challenges, to grow as individuals and achieve their fullest potential. A mobile library visits the village each Friday from 12noon to 12.30pm and can be found in the Duke of Wellington car park. This service is a valuable asset and yet will be under threat if not fully utilised. Please check it out one Friday soon.

Mail Collection

There are three post collection boxes in the village. These are all on Main Street and Whitegate at these locations: opposite the butchers, next to the white railings and at the war memorial.

Collection times: Weekdays 1230 and 1715. Saturdays 0900 (1130 at White Railings)

There are no Sunday collections.

Millennium Book

Highly acclaimed book telling the story of the village from the year 1000 right up to Millennium Night 1999. 224pp softback. Sadly now out of print though copies are available in local libraries.

Milk Deliveries

Doorstep milk deliveries are available from T D Goodall of Beech Grove Farm, Scarcroft. Mark Price is responsible for village deliveries. You can contact the dairy on 0113 289 2229. Neighbourhood Watch

The village has a very active neighbourhood watch whose aim is to cut crime and the opportunities for crime by responding promptly to alarms raised in the properties of other members of the group and reporting suspicious circumstances to the police. Each Tuesday the West Yorkshire Police relays a voice mail message to the convenors, who in turn give each member the message which consists of the number and type of offences committed in the village during the previous seven days. Parish Council

Comprises seven unpaid councillors elected every four years and a part time paid clerk. Council meetings are open to the public and are held on the third Tuesday of each month at 7.30pm in the Village Hall. An annual assembly, where the council reports on its work over the previous year is held each Spring. Any resident on the electoral roll may speak and vote there. Parish Plan

The Parish Plan was devised in wide consultation between the Parish Council, villagers and local authority planners. It sets out agreed aspirations for the future of the community and its recommendations with regard to planning issues are taken into consideration by local authority planners in respect of any developments and extensions in the village. Pilates and Dance Classes

Pilates classes are held each Monday in the Methodist Church meeting rooms. These include a 10am class at Foundation and Intermediate level, an 11am Foundation class, a 6.30pm Men's class and a 7.30pm mixed Intermediate and Advanced class. Other classes run at Bardsey on Thursdays. Planning applications

Every planning application concerning the village is referred to East Keswick parish Council for its comments and scutiny in addition to the usual vetting and process by Leeds City Council. if you are considering altering your property and would like to know how to do so in sympathy with your surroundings, please refer to the Parish Plan. You'll find details higher up this page together with a link to the actual document to download. Planning documents can now be viewed online at www.leeds.gov.uk/publicaccess This includes aplication forms, plans, drawings and background papers sch as Design and Access statements, manufacturers details, photos etc. Revised plans are added as previous ones are superseded. once a decison has been made about an application, background papers and superseded plans are removed and you'll see appeal decisions, amendments and discharge of conditions as appropriate.

The Police will be at East Keswick Village Hall one Tuesday evening a month for half an hour from 7.15pm to meet anyone who wants to meet them and to discuss any concerns in confidence. The dates for 2009 are Sep 15, Oct 29, Nov 17 and Dec 15

Post Office

Moor Lane. Open Monday to Saturday 9am to 12,30pm and 1.30pm to 5.30pm except Tuesday (open till 1pm) and Saturday afternoons. The Post Office is a valuable facility. Use it to roadtax your car, or to obtain foreign currency for you. Railway Station

Nearest mainline stations are Leeds, Harrogate and York. An hourly service operates from Leeds to London Kings Cross. Tickets (for the whole railway network) can be purchased online and timetables checked at www.nationalexpresseastcoast.com


Refuse Collection

Each home is entitled to a black wheelie bin for general waste, a green wheelie bin for recyclable waste and a brown wheelie bin for garden waste.

Black wheelie bins are emptied each Tuesday.

Green wheelie bins are emptied one Tuesday every four weeks. 2009 dates are:  Nov 24, Dec 22. 2010 dates are Jan 19, Feb 16, Mar 16, Apr 13, May 11, Jun 8, Jul 6, Aug 3 & 31, Sep 28, Oct 26, Nov 23 and Dec 21

Brown wheelie bins are emptied on the following Mondays: 2009: Nov 2, 16, 30, Dec 14. 2010: Jan 11

Green bins can take clean recyclable materials such as magazines, newspapers, food cans, drink cans, pet food cans, plastic bottles, paper and cardboard packaging. Brown bins can take grass, hedge clippings, dead house plants, twigs (up to 3cm diameter), windfall, fruit and weeds.

Large items, such as old furniture, fridges etc. can be collected from outside your home and disposed of free of charge if you call 0845 124 0113 to make the arrangements. Try to avoid phoning on Monday mornings if you can, it's their busiest time.

Household waste tips

The nearest tips to take domestic waste to are at Thorp Arch Trading Estate (the very far end of the trading estate) and Seacroft (Limewood Road). Other sites in the Leeds direction are at Harehills (Stanley Road) and Newsam Green (take Bullerthorpe Lane (signposted Oulton) from Colton Sainsburys for about two miles and follow signs).All sites are open seven days a week from 9am to 5pm in summer and 9am to 4pm in winter months (defined as the months we use GMT). Royal British Legion

Safeguarding the welfare, interests and memory of all those who served in the Armed Forces and caring for their dependents. Club covers Collingham, East Keswick and Bardsey. Short Mat Bowling

Anyone interested in playing Indoor Bowls would be most welcome at this successful group which plays indoor bowls three afternoons a week during the winter months in the Village Hall: Mondays and Tuesdays 1.15 - 3.45 pm Bowls are available for your use. Snooker Club

Has superb snooker and billiards facilities inside the Village Hall including two tables of championship standard. Members can use facilities seven days a week. Anyone interested in joining will be most welcome to come down, especially on Monday and Thursday evenings when a committee member is usually available. Tennis Club

More than a hundred villagers and many complete families are members of this vibrant club created to provide tennis playing facilities to all residents and coaching for juniors. Playing standard is from recreational to competitive levels and club nights are held each Thursday during the season (May - Sept). Toddler Group
 

Provides a fun and relaxed environment  for parents, carers and pre-school children. The group runs sessions on Thursday mornings during term time in the Village Hall from 10am to 11.30am. Tree Wardens

A large part of the village lies within a designated conservation area conferring extra protection on established (trunk diameter exceeding 75mm) trees. In addition, some other trees and ancient hedgerows have Tree Preservation Orders in place. In summary, these prohibit the felling, pruning or uprooting of any part of a tree including its roots without written permission, punishable by a fine of up to £20,000 per tree. Voluntary Care Group

The East Keswick Voluntary Care Group takes people to the doctor or optician, collects prescriptions, pops in to see people, and provides transport to the Senior Citizens Club in next village. The group is willing to help all age groups. Wildlife Trust

Formed in March 1992, the Trust aims to promote Nature Conservation within the Parish and protect the diverse habitats for wildlife. The village Wildlife Trust owns 35 acres of woodland between Harewood Avenue and the river and also manages Keswick Marsh and Frank Shire's Quarry.
